3 Steps to Taking Control

by Jake Bollig

“Only you can control your future.” Dr. Seuss

Start being the cause in your life and stop living at the effect of others. If you are consistently at the effect of others, you will never gain full control of your life or business. To liberate yourself from the constraints of your world takes three simple steps. Think of a situation where you are tired of relinquishing control. Are you fed up with being at the effect of commodity prices, market trends or overbearing rules in your personal life?

Try these three steps to propel you towards being the proverbial hammer and not the nail.

First, identify the habits, rituals or conditions that cause you to feel at the effect of the world. Is it something you can control? You cannot control whether you are selected for jury duty, but you can control if you continue operating in a business model that consistently causes you stress because of fluctuating market conditions.

Next, start hammering away at the conditions you want to change. Dr. Maya Angelou affirmed that, “You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them.” Commit yourself to finding the solution that will empower you. The answers are out there for you, go and find them! You may have committed four years or more to getting a college education, but you won’t commit two years now to learn a completely new industry that will give you the fulfillment you wish to have.

Finally, you need to become obsessively disciplined to completing your mission. Success comes to those who are obedient in the pursuit of a goal. Aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart believed, “the most difficult thing is the decision to act, the rest is merely tenacity. The fears are paper tigers. You can do anything you decide to do. You can act to change and control your life; and the procedure, the process is its own reward.”

Be committed to becoming the hammer in your world, decide from this moment that you will not be at the effect of conditions you can control. You are meant to soar and conquer, not cower and submit. Implement these three steps immediately and get moving now.
